Basement

Basement:

1. Usually, crystalline rock that is the product of an earlier orogenic cycle; underlies a less deformed and less metamorphosed cover sequence. The cover records only the younger orogenic cycle(s).
2. Economic basement is the deepest level in a basin from which hydrocarbons can be produced economically or are likely to occur.
